A tutorial on creating an inventory list in Microsoft Excel from scratch or from a template
Trying to keep track of your inventory using Excel? There are a few easy ways to do this task – you can use a pre-formatted inventory list template to do this, or you can create your sheet manually. This wikiHow shows you how to manage your business’s inventory using an Excel spreadsheet on a Windows or Mac computer.

- Click on the tab. It’s an option in the left menu. There are lots of great template options for keeping and controlling inventory for your business.
- On Mac, first click file in the upper-left corner, then click New from template… in the drop-down menu.
- Click on the search bar. it’s on top of excel New tab, under blank workbook button. It will say “Find Templates Online.”
- Find inventory list template. to do this:
- Type in the search bar at the top of the page.
- Press . This will bring up a list of templates for inventory management.
- Choose a template. Click on the inventory template that best suits your needs. Its preview page will open.
- Each inventory list template offers different features. If you don’t like the template you selected, press to return to the Templates page.
- Click. It’s on the right side of the template’s preview window.
- Wait for your template to load. This may take a few seconds. Once the template has opened, you can proceed.
- Enter your inventory information. To replace an already filled cell, double-click on it, delete the number or word there, and enter your item’s information. While your selected template may have slightly different options, each inventory list should include the following options:
- item number – The inventory (SKU) number of an item.
- item name – Descriptive name of an item.
- item cost – Price of an item.
- number is in stock – The quantity of an item in your inventory.
- net price – The total value of the stock of an item.
- Add an image for each item. You can add a picture of each inventory item. These images will go into a new “Images” column. To add a picture:
- go to Pour tab and select drawing , pictures , this device,
- Click on the image file and then click Pour,
- Right-click (Windows) or ctrl-click (Mac) the image and select draft picture,
- Click size and properties tab button > click Property drop-down > select move and resize with cells,
- Drag the size anchors to adjust the size of the image to the size you need for your inventory.
- Adjust the row and column widths for your image column to fit the image.

- Navigate to the location where you want to save the file.
- Type a name for the document (for example, “List List”) in the “File name” text box.
- Click save,
- Mac:
- Click file and then click save as,
- Type a name for the document (for example, “Inventory List”) in the “Save As” field.
- Select a save location by clicking Where? box and clicking on a folder.

- Click. It’s in the upper-left side of the box Home Tabs in Excel. If you’re trying to maintain inventory accuracy, a custom-made spreadsheet can go a long way!
- Create your inventory list headers. In the following cells, enter the following headers:

- c 1 ,
- D1 ,
- e 1 ,
- F 1 – (optional)
- Adjust the column width. Click the space between two column letters (eg, A And b) at the top of the sheet, then drag the mouse to the right to widen the column.
- Enter the inventory number of an item. to do this:
- click on cell A2,
- Type in your item’s inventory number (eg, ).
- Press .
- Add an item name. click on cell b 2and then enter the official name of the item (eg, ).
- Enter the per unit cost of the item. click on cell c2Then enter the item’s individual cost (eg, ).
- Add up the total number of items you have. click on cell D2Then enter the number of items you have in stock (for example, if you have 80 cable ties, you would enter ).
- Enter the net worth formula. to do this:
- click on cell e2,
- Type in the cell.
- Press . You should immediately see the calculated net value appear in the cell.
- You can repeat this general formula for each cell in the “Net Worth” column—just make sure you change it. c2 And D2 with the correct cell (for example, if you are multiplying the values in the cell c 10 And D10you would use those cells instead c2 And D2,
- Add the rest of your items to the inventory list. Repeat the above process for each item in your inventory. You’ll assign an item to each row until your list is complete. You are off to a great start developing an inventory system for your company.
- Add an image for each item. You can add a picture of each inventory item. These images will go into a new “Images” column. To add a picture:
- go to Pour tab and select drawing , pictures , this device,
- Click on the image file and then click Pour,
- Right-click (Windows) or ctrl-click (Mac) the image and select draft picture,
- Click size and properties tab button > click Property drop-down > select move and resize with cells,
