Euchre is a card game played with 2 teams of 2 where players try to win tricks and score the most points. Before play begins, remove 2 to 8 of each suit from a standard deck of cards so that you are left with 24 cards. This will be the deck you will use for the game. Then, split into 2 teams of 2 and sit opposite your teammate. Deal 5 cards to each player. Place the remaining 4 cards face-down next to the dealer, and flip the top card face-up. Now it’s time to decide what will suit Trump for that era. Whichever card is face-down is the first potential trump. Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player has the option of agreeing to show the suit to trump or pass to the next player. If a player agrees and chooses not to pass, that suit becomes trump, and the dealer picks up the face-up card and replaces it with a different card from his or her hand face-down. If all players pass, the decision goes back to the player to the dealer’s left, and they can choose any suit as trump. When a trump suit is established, the Jack of that suit becomes the highest ranking card in the game. Additionally, the Jack of another suit of the same suit becomes the trump card, and is the second highest ranking card. For example, if Diamonds is trump, the Jack of Diamonds would be the highest ranking card, and the Jack of Hearts would be the second highest ranking card. Once trump is established, the round begins with the player to the dealer’s left going first. The first player may play any card from his hand, in which case that suit becomes the leading suit. The next player to their left must play a card in the same suit if they have one. If they don’t, they can play a card in any suit. The game continues clockwise until everyone is gone. Then, the player playing the highest card in the leading suit wins the trick and collects the cards. However, if one or more cards have been played in the trump suit, the highest trump card wins the trick. Whoever wins the trick plays the lead card for the next trick. Once all the cards are out, each team adds up their total score. The team that chooses the trump suit wins 1 point per trick if they win 3 to 4 tricks, or 2 points per trick if they win 5 tricks. The other team wins 2 points per trick if they win 3 to 4 tricks, or 4 points per trick if they win 5 tricks. If any team wins less than 3 tricks, they score 0 points. If the team that chose trump fails to win at least 3 tricks, the other team automatically wins 2 points. Continue playing rounds until one team reaches 10 points. Whichever team reaches 10 points first wins the game! Keep reading to find out the rest of the rules of Eukre and how to keep score!
